– Rabbi Jill Zimmerman
You realize one day that some journeys you choose to go on and other journeys choose you. We are living during a time of many ordeals—and it is our choice how we want to be as we move through them.
For some of you, this is personal in your own life—a loss, illness, or transition and all that is associated.
For others, the state of our nation and external threats are a constant stress. You take on the suffering you see, feel your values being torn apart, and you’re on high alert. You may be fearful or angry or outraged.
And many of us are experiencing the pressure of both personal and external challenges.
We do not choose what happens to us or the time we are born into, but we always choose how we respond.
It is possible to walk through this time with Presence, Joy, and Inspiration. We can move forward with a supportive community of peers.
It is possible—and, for some, an imperative—to find an oasis of stillness. There you can reconnect and remember when to take a break, when you need to be inspired, when to ask for help, and remember what is important. You can learn to make meaning out of times and situations that are challenging.
This is the purpose of Hineni: Your Path to Presence.
In Hineni, you walk the Path to Presence with Rabbi Jill and our community of members.
This is what we do:
And how we do it:
The first step of the journey is simply waking up. It is from a place of personal awareness, whether positive or negative, that we can then begin to take meaningful action for ourselves.
Then in the second step of the journey, we deepen our understanding by asking questions and recognizing our core values.
For the third step, you begin to see where you are in terms of your entire life journey. You see how your current life situation fits into the process of your own becoming. You learn how the larger themes of journey enhance your own understanding of the map to the territory that is your life.
When we get to the fourth step, it's about digging deep into the blessings that are often found within your struggles. And you begin to look for the goodness that can emerge from having wrestled with challenges.
Now that you're at step five, you get to explore your own understanding of what sacred means to you in the context of your life, and in each situation. You begin to understand how to look for the enlightenment that sustains you.
And finally, at step six, you can fully stand in your own presence, being with whatever is happening, knowing and trusting that being Here and being Present is a place of holiness.
At the end, you return to the beginning. Over and over. Moment by moment. Even though the process is not often linear. In the Hineni Community, we celebrate how we are learning to become present in our own lives and how we're growing into the best version of ourselves.
When you're part of Hineni, you learn from wisdom teachings on an ongoing basis. As a rabbi, I am immersed in the world of Jewish teachings and stories. That is the primary, but not exclusive, source of what I draw upon and share with Hineni members. You will be introduced to ideas that may be new, or they may remind of what you once knew but may have forgotten.
You have the opportunity to learn from guest teachers that are deeply wise and gifted as teachers. Their stories will be ones from which you draw comfort and inspiration.
In Hineni, the process is as important as the content. You are in a community of mutual respect and deep listening. Hineni is a safe place to share your journey, learn from others, and know that you will be accepted exactly as you are.
The experience of Hineni challenges your mind, and equally regards your heart and soul and emotions and body. I share poetry, art, music that speak to the realm beyond logic and I encourage you to share what inspires you, as well. Each month you are inspired, remind where joyful is found, and invited to gratitude.
The spiritual practices introduced in Hineni are transformational. You're invited to set time aside for meditation and journaling. Engaging in mindfulness practices helps you find an oasis within the center of your being. Use that place to reconnect with your deepest intentions.
You learn how much power you have in that space between stimulus and response. It sweetens life in the smallest and biggest ways.
What Hineni Members Are Saying
I believe that each one of us is a holy being, created uniquely to give the world the gift only you can give. I also believe in creating safe, compassionate Jewish spaces where people feel accepted and heard
I believe that when we are in a community of acceptance, we flourish. As the rabbis say, we are each stamped uniquely and it is our job on earth to find out what our contribution is, and how to remove what gets in the way of shining.
I believe that each day we are alive, it is another opportunity to be present.
It’s easy to be present and mindful when everything is going well. However, the recent years have taught me that the REAL learning comes when things are not. We must practice being present when we are troubled by news in the world and by the difficulties in our own lives.
I created Hineni to be a place where we can learn mindfulness practices in the context of deep wisdom from Judaism. It's a community with a shared common purpose and a place where we help each other become present and mindful.
