If your heart breaks each day you hear of the cruelty inflicted upon children & fellow humans in our government’s care –
— take heart —
For it is far better to have a heart that feels, than one that has hardened. If your heart can still be crushed, it means you have compassion.
The alternative is to train yourself not to feel, in order to save yourself the pain.
What might be a short term solution is a long-term numbness.
May the pain move us (not stop us) to act, demand our leaders hold those responsible accountable, join with others whose hearts are also tender, practice self-care when needed –
— and remember what the poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen said – —
“There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”
