These times require us to acknowledge the truth that WE are all connected. It is the only way. It has always been the truth, but we have failed to accept this reality and live into it.
The poet Adrienne Rich writes, “we have lost track of the meaning of “we…”
Our world and our country and our relationships demand that we re-orient ourselves. The planet itself cries out for us to live “we” and not “I”.
We are on a dangerous course that reinforces the false idea that getting more for “I” is a worthwhile path. It is surely not. In fact, it is the surest doorway to nowhere.
Living in the we” means to acknowledge that every action we take matters to the whole.
Each word we utter either lifts all of us up or crushes us down.
I pray we come back to the truth of “WE” before it is too late. It’s the only way we will survive with our souls and hearts intact.
May the pendulum swing back to the consciousness of “we”. We are in this together. When you succeed, I do too. Life is not a zero sum game.
Do not follow false prophets that seek only their own singular aggrandizement, wealth or power.
The truth is the we are one.
These thoughts were inspired by Adrienne Rich’s poem In Those Years:
In Those Years by Adrienne Rich
In those years, people will say, we lost track
of the meaning of we, of you
we found ourselves
reduced to I
and the whole thing became
silly, ironic, terrible:
we were trying to live a personal life
and yes, that was the only life
we could bear witness to
But the great dark birds of history screamed and plunged
into our personal weather
They were headed somewhere else but their beaks and pinions drove
along the shore, through the rags of fog
where we stood, saying I
